Turning Gmail into a Personal Command Center
A writer shares their experience of transforming their Gmail inbox into a personal command center by integrating it with Google Calendar and Tasks. They used to treat their inbox as a secondary to-do list, but this approach became unsustainable as their inbox grew busy.
They developed a new system where they turn emails that require action into tasks or add them to their calendar. This allows them to capture the task from Gmail, add it to their schedule, and let Tasks or Calendar remind them when it's time to deal with it.
The writer uses Gmail's side panel to keep an eye on their tasks, and they can also drag emails into the Tasks panel to create a new task. They use Google Calendar for meetings, appointments, and events that require planning around a specific date and time.
According to their rule, if they need to check something off, it goes in Tasks; if they need to plan their day around it, it goes on their Calendar. This keeps their calendar from becoming a giant list of errands while ensuring important tasks don't disappear into the inbox.
