U.S. Stocks Close Higher Led by Basic Materials and Consumer Goods
U.S. equities closed higher on Monday, with gains in the Basic Materials, Consumer Goods, and Oil & Gas sectors driving the upward trend. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.18%, while the S&P 500 and NASDAQ Composite climbed 0.67% and 1.05%, respectively.
Leading the gains on the Dow were Visa Inc Class A, up 2.51% to $369.71, NVIDIA Corporation, which added 2.12% to $238.90, and UnitedHealth Group, which gained 1.80% to $378.58. Meanwhile, Merck & Company Inc, Salesforce Inc, and Johnson & Johnson were among the biggest losers, declining 3.30%, 2.09%, and 1.21%, respectively.
The S&P 500 saw PTC Inc as its top performer, surging 33.49% to $192.26, followed by Charles River Laboratories International Inc and Moderna Inc, which rose 7.09% and 6.95%, respectively. The worst performers included CH Robinson Worldwide Inc, Lennar Corporation Class A, and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc, which fell 10.81%, 6.73%, and 4.67%, respectively.
On the NASDAQ Composite, Veea Inc led the gains with a 71.77% rise to $5.72, while Wheeler Real Estate Investment Trust Inc, Sono Group NV, and Sunshine Biopharma Inc were the worst performers, dropping 47.34%, 39.66%, and 36.98%, respectively. The VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, increased by 1.37% to 15.52.
In commodities, December gold futures rose 0.27% to $4,168.01 per troy ounce, while November crude oil futures fell 0.25% to $89.21 per barrel. The EUR/USD pair remained unchanged at 1.12, and the USD/JPY pair increased by 0.08% to 157.99. The U.S. Dollar Index was unchanged at 101.93.
