U.S. Stocks Rise Led by Basic Materials and Consumer Goods
U.S. stocks closed higher on Monday, with gains led by the Basic Materials, Consumer Goods, and Oil & Gas sectors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.18%, while the S&P 500 added 0.67%, and the NASDAQ Composite climbed 1.05%. Among the top performers on the Dow were Visa Inc Class A, up 2.51% to $369.71, NVIDIA Corporation, which gained 2.12% to reach an all-time high of $238.90, and UnitedHealth Group, rising 1.80% to $378.58.
The worst performers on the Dow included Merck & Company Inc, which fell 3.30% to $139.54, Salesforce Inc, down 2.09% to $229.79, and Johnson & Johnson, losing 1.21% to $252.93. On the S&P 500, PTC Inc stood out with a 33.49% surge to $192.26, while Charles River Laboratories International, Inc hit a three-year high, rising 7.09% to $310.77. Conversely, CH Robinson Worldwide Inc dropped 10.81% to $140.67, and Lennar Corporation Class A hit a three-year low, falling 6.73% to $74.44.
The NASDAQ Composite saw extreme movements, with Veea Inc soaring 71.77% to $5.72 and PDS Biotechnology Corp up 60.32% to $1.20. The biggest declines were seen in Wheeler Real Estate Investment Trust Inc, which plummeted 47.34% to an all-time low of $1.09, and Sono Group NV, down 39.66% to $1.59.
Commodities also saw mixed movements, with gold for December delivery rising 0.27% to $4,168.00 per troy ounce, while Brent crude for November delivery fell 0.26% to $89.20 per barrel. The EUR/USD exchange rate remained unchanged at 1.12, while the USD/JPY rose 0.08% to 157.99.
