UAF Students Hit with 5GB Google Storage Limit
The University of Alaska Fairbanks is facing issues with Google storage limits affecting student access to coursework and assignment uploads. The new limit, which took effect on Thursday, imposes a 5 GB total storage cap on UAF students for all Google services including Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and others.
This change follows Google's decision in early 2025 to end free unlimited storage for higher education institutions. Since then, the university's information technology teams have been working to reduce digital storage use and establish new policies. Despite efforts to communicate the changes to students multiple times, many are still experiencing problems with their accounts.
Nanook Technology Services reports that while a majority of students are under the 5 GB limit, those who exceed it are receiving notifications to reduce their storage footprint. Students can contact the NTS Help Desk or online support options for assistance or submit a storage support request through the University of Alaska service portal if they believe an exception is needed.
