Trade unions in the UK are poised to expand their influence within major tech companies following the implementation of new workplace access rights. On Monday, Google UK reached an agreement with the Prospect union, allowing it to organize among approximately 7,000 workers across its UK operations, excluding DeepMind. The Communication Workers Union is separately seeking recognition at Google DeepMind. This deal mirrors a similar agreement between Prospect and Meta, which employs around 5,000 people in the UK.

The new agreements enable unions to communicate directly with non-unionized workers and encourage them to join. Prospect, which represents over 160,000 UK workers across various sectors, will now be able to conduct sessions within Google’s workplaces, including its headquarters in King’s Cross, London. Mike Clancy, Prospect’s general secretary, emphasized that the deal signals the union’s ability to negotiate with even the largest global tech companies, highlighting the importance of giving tech workers a stronger voice on issues like pay, AI deployment, and workplace culture.

Google stated that the access agreement was signed to comply with the new UK workplace legislation, though it maintained that it already had strong internal employee relations. The company described the step as building on its existing work with internal employee representative groups. Paul Nowak, the TUC general secretary, predicted a wave of union recognition deals in the private sector over the next year as the new rules take effect. The Employment Rights Act grants unions the right to enter workplaces to meet workers or communicate electronically, with employers required to inform workers of their right to join a union starting in January.
