UniCredit Strengthens Control Over Commerzbank Amid Pan-European Deal Talks

Italian bank UniCredit S.p.A., listed on the Milan Stock Exchange as UCG, has solidified its control over German lender Commerzbank with a 48% stake. This strategic move follows previous discussions about a potential pan-European tie-up between the two banks.

The news comes after the European Council granted a narrow sanctions exemption to UniCredit, allowing it to unfreeze funds tied to a 2015 put option related to the sale of Ukrsotsbank. The exemption paves the way for UniCredit to settle this outstanding obligation and transfer shares or make payments as needed.

UniCredit has also partnered with Accenture and IBM to modernize its core banking systems across 13 European markets through a multi-year deal. This technological upgrade will incorporate tools from Accenture and IBM, including cloud services, artificial intelligence, and other cutting-edge technologies.
