United Airlines Boosts Premium Capacity with Holiday Route Upgrades
United Airlines has announced that it will be deploying its premium-heavy Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on two new holiday routes. The move is part of the airline's strategy to concentrate premium capacity on high-demand long-haul markets during peak travel periods.
The aircraft, which features 48 Polaris business class seats, will operate on select flights from San Francisco (SFO) to Houston (IAH) and Sydney (SYD). This layout is one of the configurations used by United's Boeing 787-9 fleet, but it has more premium cabins than the standard versions.
The decision reflects careful capacity planning by United. The airline has been growing its premium footprint as part of its long-term fleet renewal strategy, which includes new Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321XLR deliveries. By rotating the higher-premium 787-9 into holiday-heavy routes, United can maximize revenue on flights that historically sell out weeks in advance.
Passengers making the roughly 15-hour journey from San Francisco to Sydney will find increased opportunities to fly in a lie-flat suite, complete with direct aisle access and enhanced dining service. Award travelers using MileagePlus miles or partner programs may also find more Polaris award space during the deployment window.
