United Way Steps Up as Martin County Transportation Options Shrink

The Martin Community Coach transportation program in Martin County has experienced significant funding cuts since June 30. This has left eligible riders, including adults 65 and older, individuals with disabilities, and those living below the federal poverty level with limited access to transportation. Prior to the funding loss, these riders could use the program as frequently as needed.

Henry, a Home Depot employee who relies on the Martin Community Coach for transportation, was severely affected by the sudden change in service. He had limited access to transportation and was forced to make impossible choices between missing work or delaying critical medical treatments. His mother noted that working at Home Depot gives Henry 'confidence, purpose, and a sense of belonging.'

United Way has stepped up to fill the gap left by the funding loss. They have been coordinating rides through Ride United, which provides transportation for essential needs such as medical appointments, employment, grocery shopping, and other critical services.

Carol G. Houwaart-Diez, president and CEO of United Way of Martin County, stated that 'transportation is easy to take for granted until suddenly it isn't there.' She emphasized the importance of bringing people and resources together to respond to the needs of the community. United Way will continue working with community partners to identify solutions and advocate for sustainable transportation options.
