UnitedHealth Group Inc.'s (UNH) is investing heavily in artificial intelligence to fuel growth for Optum Insight, its health services arm. The company plans to spend nearly $1.5 billion on AI-related initiatives in 2026, with one-third dedicated to software products and platforms.

The strategy aims to shift Optum Insight towards an 'AI-first' model, creating new revenue streams while improving healthcare workflows. This approach is moving beyond experimentation into commercial products, such as digital prior authorization and real-time payer-provider interfaces.

Optum Insight's AI capabilities are expanding across autonomous coding, clinical quality and safety tools, and value-based care management. Early results show promising traction, including a 96% first-pass approval rate for AI-driven digital prior authorization while retaining human review for non-approved cases.
