UnitedHealth Rallies on Prior-Authorization Rollback
UnitedHealth Group's (UNH) share price rose by approximately 1.4% to $394.745 on Tuesday morning following the announcement that it would be removing prior-authorization requirements for a significant portion of its services.
The changes, set to take effect from October 1, will apply across commercial insurance, Medicare Advantage, and individual Affordable Care Act plans, with the goal of eliminating prior authorization for 30% of services by year-end.
This move is part of UnitedHealthcare's efforts to reduce administrative roadblocks and improve the delivery of care. By streamlining the approval process, the company aims to accelerate payments to rural hospitals by as much as 50% for approximately 1,400 facilities.
The insurer reported second-quarter results with $112 billion in revenue, $8 billion in operating earnings, and a net margin of 4.9%. However, despite these strong numbers, the current share price of $394.745 is still 33.38% below the estimated value of $592.50.
The decision to simplify its model has been well-received by investors, but it remains to be seen whether this move will pay off in terms of reduced costs and improved relationships with patients and providers. The company's margins are already relatively low at 4.9%, leaving little room for error in the future.
