Universal Studios Promises Relief for Noise-Haunted Neighborhoods
Universal Studios Hollywood hosted a meeting for nearby residents to address concerns about noise levels coming from the park's new roller coaster, Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift.
The meeting was attended by over 350 people and included presentations from several executives, including Steve Blum, Executive VP of Engineering & Safety, John McReynolds, SVP of External Affairs, and Cindy Gardner from Corporate Affairs.
They explained that the coaster would not operate between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM until the end of the year, with some days starting as early as 7:00 AM. They also promised a new temporary barrier to absorb sound, covering over 1,900 sq. ft.
Residents shared their concerns about the noise and presented research on the science of exposure to constant screams from Dr. Luc Arnal. Roy P. Disney, great-nephew of Walt Disney, stated that he believes Universal is violating its land usage permits.
The presentation was met with hostility from some attendees, who shouted demands for the screams to be eliminated within a year. Blum responded jokingly by suggesting that residents wear noise-cancelling headphones.
