University of Washington Opens First Full-Time Campus Base at Microsoft
The University of Washington has opened a dedicated 48,500-square-foot facility on Microsoft’s Redmond campus, marking the first time a major research university has established a full-time presence within a leading tech company’s headquarters. The new base, located in Building 92 on Microsoft’s West Campus, will house the Global Innovation Exchange (GIX), a program focused on AI, robotics, and responsible technology. Microsoft is providing the space rent-free and contributing $42 million in-kind to support the facility, bringing its total investment in GIX to over $100 million since its launch in 2017.
Students in the Master of Science in Technology Innovation program will study alongside Microsoft researchers and employees, benefiting from shared classrooms, prototyping facilities, and collaboration spaces. The arrangement also includes Microsoft staff participating in programs, such as an evening mini-MBA for senior technical leaders. Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President at Microsoft, described the partnership as unprecedented, emphasizing the unique opportunity for applied learning and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The new headquarters will concentrate on responsible technology, leadership, and innovation, preparing students for emerging technological challenges. University of Washington President Robert J. Jones highlighted the broader societal benefits, stating that the training provided will benefit the state, region, and world. GIX operates independently, supported by Microsoft’s contributions rather than direct funding from the university or state.
