Unofficial mod brings Nvidia DLSS 5 neural rendering to AMD Radeon RX 6000 cards
An independent project called DLSS-NR on AMD has enabled Nvidia's DLSS 5 neural rendering technology on AMD Radeon graphics cards, with its latest October 3 update extending support to the RX 6000 series. This unofficial software, labeled as Alpha by its developer, has not been endorsed by either Nvidia or AMD. The project is hosted on GitHub by a developer named danielblnc and has seen rapid development, with nine builds released between September 24 and October 3.
The most recent version, 0.6.0, adds support for RDNA2 cards and includes performance improvements and fixes for issues like dark areas and flickering lights in pre-upscale mode. However, all performance claims come directly from the developer, as no external measurements have been published. Version 0.5.0 claimed up to 207% performance improvement on RX 7000 cards and 5% on RX 9000, while version 0.5.1 claimed further gains of 8% in Fast mode and 6% in Reference mode on RX 9000.
The project requires users to supply Nvidia's neural rendering library themselves and is designed for DirectX 12 games that use FSR on Windows 11. It warns that games with anti-cheat measures will block the file. The installer size has grown from 13.1MB to 59.8MB with the latest build, and the project remains in Alpha status despite its rapid development.
This effort to adapt Nvidia's technology for AMD hardware is notable, as neural rendering is a feature Nvidia sells with GeForce cards, while AMD offers FSR as its alternative. Neither company has commented on the project.
