UPI Surpasses Visa Quarterly Transactions Amid Global Payments Shake-Up
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has been making waves in the global payments landscape. In August alone, UPI handled an impressive 24.51 billion transactions, bringing its quarterly pace to roughly 73.53 billion transactions.
This is a significant milestone for UPI, as it now rivals Visa's entire global processing count of 71.7 billion transactions. While the comparison has limits, given that UPI primarily moves money directly between Indian bank accounts and Visa operates a global network with different transaction values and economics, the numbers are undeniably impressive.
Visa shares took a hit on Tuesday, dropping approximately 1.5% to $369.59 following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push for UPI to connect with more international payment systems. The valuation picture offers some protection, however, as Visa trades 12.97% below its GF Value estimate of $424.66.
UPI does not need to replace Visa everywhere to matter; it only needs to capture more payment flows in the right markets. With its focus on direct-to-bank transfers and growing adoption targets Visa's most lucrative territory, the tollbooth connecting consumers and merchants across borders.
