The U.S. Air Force has reached a significant milestone in its modernization of nuclear arsenal security with the declaration of Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for the Boeing MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopter.

This achievement allows the aircraft to be employed operationally in protecting intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) fields, replacing the veteran UH-1N Huey. The Grey Wolf is based on the Leonardo AW139 civil helicopter model and features superior performance in flight parameters compared to its predecessor.

The new helicopter has a maximum speed of 167 mph, a range of approximately 890 miles, and can transport up to 15 passengers or four litters with five medical personnel. The UH-1N, which served for over 50 years, reaches only 149 mph, has an operational radius of around 300 miles, and can carry six litters.

The MH-139 is expected to provide greater speed and survivability during the transition to the LGM-35A Sentinel missile program. The 40th Squadron is currently equipped with the new aircraft, while the 37th and 54th squadrons will be equipped later.
