US and China Officials Meet Ahead of Presidential Summit Amid AI, Trade Concerns
High-stakes talks between US and Chinese officials began on Sunday at JPMorgan Chase's headquarters in Manhattan, aiming to prepare ground for agreements on AI, trade, and critical minerals ahead of a presidential summit this week. The discussions, led by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, will cover issues such as the status of a US-China trade truce set to expire on November 10th.
The talks also focus on the flow of Chinese rare-earth magnets and critical minerals, which US officials claim are insufficient. Additionally, potential guardrails for AI development will be discussed after reports of key security breaches involving AI models.
Anna Ashton, a longtime China trade analyst, believes that small steps to show continued efforts to avoid escalating tensions in the delicate trade relationship may emerge from the talks. She predicts that both sides' general best expectation is to maintain the status quo.
