US and NABEP Partner with Venezuela on Oil Reserve Development
The US government has reached an agreement with North American Blue Energy Partners to develop Venezuela's oil reserves, in line with President Donald Trump's ambitious deal.
The joint venture between the US and NABEP will see the company, owned by Venezuelan businessman Alejandro Betancourt, expand its operations in Venezuela. Chevron is also expanding its operations in the country. The agreement was reached after a long period of pressure from the US on Venezuela to allow foreign investment in its oil industry.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright has promoted the deal as a way to increase confidence for private businesses to invest in Venezuela, directly with the government and through partnerships like NABEP. However, analysts are skeptical about the feasibility of the project, citing the complexity of reviving Venezuela's oil industry and the legal concerns surrounding Delcy Rodríguez's authority to grant 100-year rights over 17 oil fields.
On a related note, Chevron has confirmed its expansion in Venezuela, with no evidence suggesting other major US oil companies are readying for a return to the country. ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods stated that Venezuela was 'uninvestable' in January, and a company spokesman reiterated this stance recently.
