US-Canada Rift Reflected in Google Map Naming Dispute

Google Maps has updated its naming convention for Lake Ontario to reflect the latest presidential order. President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming the Great Lake, but with a twist - users in the United States will see it labeled as 'Lake America', while those in Canada and the rest of the world will continue to see 'Lake Ontario'.

The change follows Google's policy of following official government sources. In this case, the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) made the switch after Trump's order, prompting Google Maps to implement a solution that shows different names based on the user's location.

This is not the first time Google has taken this approach; last year, it redesignated the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America' for U.S. users after a similar presidential order.

Not all mapping programs are taking the same route, however - MapQuest has stated that it will keep the original name for everyone.
