US Measles Cases Rise as Push for Separate Vaccines Gains Momentum
Measles cases are on the rise in the US, with over 30 states experiencing outbreaks. However, instead of promoting the existing three-shot vaccine regimen, some are pushing for separate single-antigen shots for measles, mumps, and rubella. But Merck, the manufacturer, has stated that this would be a costly and unnecessary endeavor.
According to Merck's own estimate, rebuilding and licensing new single-antigen vaccines could take over a decade. Paul Offit of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia agrees, saying it 'would just make it more expensive and less likely to be used.'
This comes as the US is experiencing its worst measles year in three decades. Parents are being sold a false choice, with some arguing that separate shots would offer more flexibility.
