US Navy Awards $20 Billion Contract for New Sixth-Generation Fighter
The US Navy has awarded Boeing a $20 billion contract to build its new sixth-generation F/A-XX fighter, which is set to replace the Navy's existing F/A-18 Super Hornet fleet from the 2030s. The aircraft will be designed with an open mission systems architecture and advanced mission systems to improve operational reach and capacity.
Boeing has been working on new technologies and investing in facilities for next-generation aircraft, according to Steve Parker, president and CEO of Boeing Defence, Space & Security. He stated that it is an honour to be selected to produce the Navy's first sixth-generation platform.
The F/A-XX will have advanced features such as stealth capabilities and a blended shape design. The aircraft will also work with unmanned systems, as part of the Navy's plans for its next generation of carrier aircraft.
