US Pressures Canada to Buy Boeing Aircraft Amid Trade Negotiations
The US government is continuing to pressure Canada to purchase Boeing's E-7 Wedgetail airborne early warning aircraft as part of ongoing trade negotiations, despite Ottawa's selection of Saab's GlobalEye in May 2026. Washington has explicitly linked the procurement of U.S. radar technology and defense systems to potential tariff relief across major Canadian industrial sectors.
The dispute centers on Canada's planned procurement of five to six airborne early warning and control aircraft, where Saab's GlobalEye on a Canadian-made Bombardier Global 6500 airframe was selected over Boeing's 737-based E-7 Wedgetail. Washington seeks to replace the Swedish system with U.S. hardware and integrate Canadian procurement into North American defense architectures.
The US is using trade tariffs as leverage, affecting steel, automotive, and aerospace goods, and has given Canada a deadline of August 19 to conclude an agreement that would lower existing tariffs on these products. In exchange for this concession, Ottawa could be required to purchase the E-7 Wedgetail instead of the GlobalEye.
