US Stock Market Indexes Drift Lower Amid Oil Price Increase
The US stock market indexes drifted lower on Tuesday, despite most individual stocks rising in value. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.08%, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.12% and the Nasdaq Composite plummeted 0.32%. Oil prices increased as a result of tensions between Iran and the US.
Iran reiterated its stance on keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed until certain conditions are met, including sanctions relief and compensation. President Trump responded by demanding 50 years of reparations from Iran. This development pushed up oil prices, with West Texas Intermediate crude rising about 1.4% to $83 per barrel.
The top stock market indexes were quiet, but two mega-caps had a significant impact on their performance. Alphabet and Amazon both dropped by 2.2%, contributing significantly to the Nasdaq Composite's decline.
