US Stocks Soar as Corporate Profits Reach New Heights
The US stock market made significant gains on Tuesday, breaking multiple records as corporate profits continue to soar. The S&P 500 rose 1.8%, surpassing its previous all-time high set just a couple of months ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 907 points to its own record, while the Nasdaq composite jumped 2.6%. This upward trend comes despite concerns about high inflation and worries over potential bubbles in AI technology.
The surge in stock prices can be attributed to companies like Palantir Technologies and Caterpillar, which reported stronger profits than expected. Palantir's CEO Alex Karp described the quarter as 'otherworldly', with revenue increasing 93%. Caterpillar also exceeded expectations, making over $20 billion in sales and revenue for the first time.
The drop in oil prices also contributed to the market's upward momentum. Brent crude sank 5.3% to $79.36 per barrel, easing concerns about inflation. The lower yields on bonds further relaxed pressure on stock prices, leading to a notable move in the bond market with the yield on the 10-year Treasury falling to 4.62%.
