US Treasury Buybacks May Only Temporarily Alleviate Debt Burden

JPMorgan's co-head of global fundamental research, James Sullivan, warns that the U.S. government's efforts to manage pressure in the Treasury market may only temporarily alleviate the problem.

The strategy involves buying back longer-duration bonds while issuing shorter-dated bills, which can provide temporary relief but leaves the underlying debt burden intact.

Sullivan compared this approach to paying a mortgage with credit cards, saying 'It's a little bit like refinancing longer-term obligations with shorter-term borrowing. It can work for a while, but eventually the mismatch starts to become more obvious.'

The U.S. Treasury Department has announced plans to double the size of its government debt buybacks, starting September 9 and running through November 4.
