USC Researcher Predicts Which Tech Giant Could Fall First
USC researcher Jeffrey Cole, director of the Center for the Digital Future, has ranked the vulnerability of major tech giants to potential collapse. In an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek on September 24, 2026, Cole argued that Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms may not survive another 25 years, despite their dominance. He ranked Meta as the most fragile, followed by Apple, Alphabet, and Amazon, which he called the toughest case to make against.
Cole's ranking was based on factors like legal exposure, free cash flow, margin trends, and valuation. Market performance over the month ending October 2, 2026, aligned with his assessment. Meta's stock surged 22.9%, while Amazon's fell 1.36%. Alphabet and Apple saw modest gains of 1.96% and 2.69%, respectively.
Meta, labeled 'the tobacco company of the 21st century,' faces significant legal challenges and declining free cash flow. Amazon, however, shows strong growth in AWS revenue and a substantial backlog. Alphabet's search business is under threat from AI disruptors, while Apple's high valuation and late AI entry pose risks.
Cole's analysis suggests that tech dominance is fleeting, with historical evidence showing that most top companies from 1980 didn't survive to 2020. Investors in broad index funds may find themselves holding both incumbents and emerging competitors like Anthropic and OpenAI.
