Valley Airports Test Collision-Alert Tech After NY Tragedy

Honeywell Aerospace is partnering with the Phoenix Aviation Department to study expanding surface alert technology to ground vehicles at three Valley airports.

The study comes after a plane collided with a fire truck on the runway at New York's LaGuardia Airport in March, killing two pilots and injuring dozens more. Surface alert technology alerts drivers and pedestrians of potential collisions by sending them visual or audio warnings through their vehicle's dashboard or a mobile app.

The goal is to test this technology on ground vehicles such as cars, trucks, and buses at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, and Glendale Municipal Airport. The study will also evaluate the effectiveness of the system in preventing collisions.
