Valve is working to bring Nvidia GeForce support to SteamOS, but progress has been slow. The company's Pierre-Loup Griffais said supporting Nvidia drivers is a top priority, but it could take years for the issue to be resolved.

Internal tests have enabled drivers in SteamOS's main tree and displayed graphics using certain generations of Nvidia GPUs, but gaming performance still lags behind AMD. Griffais claimed Valve is seeing daily improvements, however.

The lack of Nvidia driver support has limited the appeal of SteamOS for third-party hardware manufacturers and custom builders. Currently, only AMD graphics chips are recommended for installation on the Steam Deck and Steam Machine.
