Vancouver Startup Launches TryCanadian Directory for North-of-the-Border Alternatives
A Vancouver-based startup has launched an online platform aimed at helping consumers find Canadian alternatives to international brands. The TryCanadian directory researches company factors such as ownership, headquarters, and manufacturing locations to provide accurate information on Canadian businesses.
The platform separates different questions rather than labeling companies as simply 'Canadian' or 'not Canadian.' For example, a company may be described as 'Canadian-owned,' meaning the ultimate control of the business appears to be Canadian, while another may be labeled 'Made in Canada,' indicating that its products are manufactured or substantially produced in Canada.
The platform currently lists over 1,000 companies across various industries, including Automotive and Technology, Clothing and Entertainment, Groceries, and Travel. Popular alternatives include A&W Canada over McDonald's, Giant Tiger over Walmart, and Nature Clean over Clorox.
