Vanguard's High-Stakes Bet on AI Leaders
The Vanguard Morningstar Mega Cap Growth ETF (MGK) has recently come under scrutiny due to its high concentration in top growth stocks. As of September 25, MGK's 10 largest holdings make up a staggering 69% of the fund, with Nvidia (NVDA), Apple (AAPL), Alphabet (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), and Amazon (AMZN) holding a combined 51.8% stake.
While this high concentration may seem concerning, proponents argue that it's a deliberate strategy to capitalize on the growth potential of these industry leaders in artificial intelligence (AI). The fund's manager is betting big on companies like Nvidia, Broadcom, and Advanced Micro Devices, which are well-positioned to meet increased demand for AI compute and inference.
However, critics point out that this concentration also increases the risk of losses if there's a downturn in the theme shared among top holdings. Moreover, mega-cap growth stocks have seen their valuations fall due to declining earnings growth rates and increasing skepticism about AI investments.
