Venezuela's Acting President Pledges Elections Without Date or Framework
Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodriguez addressed the UN General Assembly on September 23, 2026, promising elections without specifying a date or framework for monitoring. Her speech came after a US military operation in January removed President Nicolas Maduro and his wife from power.
Rodriguez thanked Donald Trump for his willingness to resume diplomatic relations and cooperation with Venezuela, as reported by Al Jazeera. However, the Chevron oil deal had already been signed several weeks prior to her speech, expanding the company's operations in the country and positioning it to increase production by up to 50%.
A former Chevron executive, Ali Moshiri, provided information to the CIA that was included in a secret assessment presented to Trump before the January operation. Moshiri recommended working with Rodriguez instead of any opposition figure after removing Maduro.
