Vertical AI Startups Can Still Win, Says Andreessen Horowitz Partner
The release of 'Claudeforce' by Anthropic and Salesforce has sparked debate about which software companies will dominate in the AI era.
Seema Amble, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), weighed in on the topic with a recent post on social media platform X (Twitter).
Amble argued that incumbent system companies, such as Salesforce, could gain an advantage over vertical AI startups. This is because customers can connect their existing systems of record to AI tools like Claude or Codex without needing new apps.
However, Amble also suggested that this situation will create opportunities for vertical AI startups. She stated, 'For a vertical startup to win, it has to do one specific task better than an incumbent enterprise agent or a general-purpose agent.' This requires focusing on a single task and building clear data assets.
