Veterans' Home on the National Mall: A Beacon of Hope Amid Housing Crisis

A fully accessible modular home is being constructed on the National Mall in Washington D.C. as part of the Purple Heart Homes National Mall Veteran Home Build project, which aims to raise awareness about veteran homelessness.

The home will be built by tradespeople and volunteers from The Home Depot's associate volunteer force, Team Depot, over several days. Once completed, it will be transported to Glasgow, Virginia, where it will be the permanent residence of Mr. Jim Taylor, a Marine Corps veteran who is transitioning to independent living.

The project highlights the urgent need for affordable and accessible housing for veterans, with nearly 33,000 facing homelessness each night and over 2.75 million living in inadequate housing. The Home Depot Foundation has provided a $250,000 grant to support the initiative, which showcases modular construction as a viable solution to the veteran housing crisis.

The project is a partnership between Purple Heart Homes, The Home Depot Foundation, and local community partners, with a shared goal of providing permanent supportive housing for veterans. According to John Gallina, co-founder and CEO of Purple Heart Homes, 'This isn't simply about building homes but about building a legacy worthy of America's veterans.'
