Vietnam Airlines 787 Experiences Emergency Landing in Munich
A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 experienced a serious incident at Munich Airport on August 15, leading to an emergency landing and runway closure.
The aircraft, VN-A867, was departing for Hanoi when it used almost the full length of Runway 26L before becoming airborne. Publicly available flight tracking data suggests that the jet lifted off only a short distance from the end of the runway, with an unusually shallow initial climb profile.
After circling for around two hours, the crew leveled off at relatively low altitude and entered a holding pattern near Munich. The aircraft remained in the vicinity until it repositioned for an emergency landing on Runway 26R, where it sustained damage to multiple main-gear tires.
Germany's aviation authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, which will examine flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder information, as well as maintenance and loading records. The inquiry is expected to review performance calculations and aircraft configuration to determine whether any factors contributed to the incident.
