Vietnam Airlines 787 Overruns Runway in Munich Emergency

A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 overran the runway during takeoff at Munich Airport on August 15, prompting an emergency return to the airport. The aircraft suffered a tailstrike and landing-gear damage before circling to dump fuel and making a safe landing with multiple blown tyres.

The incident occurred on flight VN34 from Munich to Hanoi. Video footage shows the plane using almost the full length of the 4,000-meter runway before lifting off in a cloud of dust beyond the paved surface.

Aviation specialists have raised questions about the takeoff performance, suggesting that the jet may have reached rotation speed only very late in the take-off run. An official investigation will examine the aircraft's performance on take-off, the condition of the runway and overrun areas, and the crew's decision-making at key points in the departure.
