Vietnam Airlines B789 Suffers Serious Incident During Takeoff from Munich
A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 suffered a serious incident while departing from Munich Airport in Germany on August 15th, 2026. The aircraft, registration VN-A867, was operating flight VN-34 to Hanoi when it experienced a late rotation and tailstrike during takeoff.
Huge clouds of dust and dirt rose as the plane became airborne, striking the ground with its tail. Despite this, the crew continued to climb to FL100. However, they soon reported issues with tyre pressure and requested permission to dump fuel.
About 90 minutes after departure, the aircraft performed two low approaches to runway 26R before landing safely on the same runway. The left main gear trailed smoke during the landing process and became disabled on the runway.
Initial reports suggest that the plane overran the end of the runway and damaged some runway lights. Photographic evidence shows the aircraft taking off about 120 meters past the runway's edge, already in the grass and approaching the first row of approach lights.
