A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 suffered significant damage during takeoff from Munich Airport on August 15. The aircraft, operating flight VN34 to Hanoi, accelerated down runway 26L before lifting off near the end of the paved surface. This resulted in a tailstrike, where the underside of the rear fuselage made contact with the runway.

Video footage and images shared publicly show extensive damage to the aft fuselage, horizontal stabilizer, and vertical stabilizer. The aircraft continued its departure, leveling off at 9,000 feet before holding near Munich for an extended period.

The crew then carried out multiple fuel jettison maneuvers before lining up for an emergency landing on runway 26R. Upon touchdown, several main-gear tires suffered damage, and debris was scattered across the runway surface.
