Vietnam Airlines Flight Diverts After Tail Strike During Takeoff

A Vietnam Airlines flight was forced to dump fuel and return to Munich International Airport after its tail struck the runway during takeoff on August 15, 2026.

The Boeing 787-9 aircraft, which was scheduled to fly from Munich to Hanoi, overran the runway before taking off. The incident was caught on camera by an aircraft engineer who shared footage of the plane taxiing down the runway and striking its tail on the ground.

According to Flightradar24, the flight circled above Munich for around two hours while fuel was dumped prior to landing back at the airport. Damage to the aircraft's tail and tires is suspected due to a possible brake seizure or internal fault.

Vietnam Airlines confirmed that all passengers and crew members were safe after landing safely at Munich Airport, but the incident has raised concerns about the safety of flight operations.
