Virgin Australia Buys Five Boeing 737-8s and Two Embraer E190-E2s
Virgin Australia plans to expand its fleet by purchasing five Boeing 737-8 aircraft and two Embraer E190-E2s in FY27. The airline aims to lift its owned fleet share to 39% with these purchases, a significant increase from its current mix. Virgin Australia has historically relied on leasing, but buying more of the next-generation 737-8s early in their operational life can reduce dependence on lessors for decades.
The planned purchase is supported by an improved balance sheet, with net debt at the end of FY26 of AUD 1.2 billion and cash reserves of AUD 1.8 billion, leaving AUD 1.6 billion in liquidity available. The airline generated AUD 1.3 billion in operating cash flow during FY26, which was used to fund capital expenditures totaling AUD 884 million.
Virgin Australia's fleet renewal strategy involves phasing out older aircraft, with the Boeing 737-8 set to operate domestic trunk routes and short-haul international services alongside the existing 737NG fleet. The airline plans to have a total of 110 aircraft in its fleet by 30 June 2027, excluding wet-leased capacity.
