Virginia Fines Microsoft Data Center Over Emissions Violations
A Microsoft data center in Leesburg, Virginia has been fined nearly $2.5 million for exceeding emissions limits last year. The facility, which is part of 'Data Center Alley', a nickname for Loudoun County due to its high concentration of data centers, reported a failure of an electrical substation and operated 62 emergency engines for seven days in June 2025.
According to the Department of Environmental Quality, the facility exceeded permitted fuel emissions limits for pollutants including CO, VOC, PM10, and PM2.5 during this time. As part of a settlement with Microsoft, the company has agreed to invest $2.4 million toward an environmental project in Loudoun County to monitor air quality.
Loudoun County is debating more stringent standards and locations for data centers moving forward. The county's Board of Supervisors voted 7-1 to pause new applications for a year, citing concerns about potential environmental and health impacts. Opponents argue that the data centers provide significant economic benefits, including projected $1.3 billion in local tax revenue.
