Visa and Mastercard Settle $167.5M Fee Dispute With Independent ATM Operators
A $167.5 million settlement agreement between Visa and Mastercard may bring payouts to users who believe they were charged excessive fees at certain ATMs.
The companies did not admit to any wrongdoing, but were accused of preventing independent ATM operators from lowering surcharges on their machines.
According to the lawsuit, Visa and Mastercard had violated antitrust and consumer protection laws by limiting IATM operators' ability to discount or charge lower access fees for transactions processed on competing networks.
The settlement class includes eligible independent ATM users who were unjustly charged an excessive access fee at an independent ATM in the U.S. between October 24, 2007, and August 14, 2026.
