Visa Edges Out Mastercard at Record Highs
Visa and Mastercard are both trading at record highs, with Visa closing at $382.41 and Mastercard at $599.86 on August 24.
The two companies have different approaches to cross-border transactions, with Mastercard pulling ahead in terms of monetization.
In the most recent quarter, Visa reported a 12% year-over-year increase in cross-border volume excluding intra-Europe, while Mastercard posted 12% global cross-border growth.
However, Mastercard's assessments grew 20% against 12% volume growth, a gap attributed to international pricing and mix. In contrast, Visa converted the same volume growth into international transaction revenue of only 6%, held back by yield mix and lower-yielding Visa Direct flows.
Visa trades at 25x forward earnings compared to Mastercard's 30x, making it the cheaper pick despite both stocks closing at record highs. However, Mastercard's cross-border yield advantage translates into another full year of double-digit EPS growth over Visa would change this analysis.
