Visa, Mastercard Settle $167.5 Million Class-Action Lawsuit Over ATM Fees
A class-action lawsuit has led to a $167.5 million settlement between Visa and Mastercard, who have agreed to pay out for allegedly forcing cardholders to pay higher ATM access fees than they would have otherwise.
The lawsuit, Burke v. Visa Inc., et al., claimed that the payment networks violated federal and state antitrust laws by prohibiting independent ATM operators from lowering their withdrawal fees.
Between 2007 and 2026, millions of consumers could have been affected, as they were charged a fee after withdrawing cash from an independent ATM at a non-bank location, such as a convenience store or gas station.
