Visa's Low Take Rate: A Deliberate Choice
Visa's business model is highly effective and generates billions of dollars in revenue each year. The company has a global reach and its plastic is widely accepted, with millions of Americans owning at least one Visa debit or credit card.
The take rate, which is the percentage of revenue collected from gross payment volume, is a little less than 0.3%. While this may seem low, it's because Visa functions as an open-loop operator, processing transactions and collecting fees without extending credit itself.
As an intermediary for many merchants, Visa's business model relies on keeping the merchant discount rate (MDR) modest to ensure stores are willing to accept its cards. This limits the scope for increasing the take rate.
