Vistra Stock Surges 10% Amid Broad Utility Sector Rally
Vistra Corp. (VST) shares surged nearly 10% on Tuesday, mirroring a broader rally in utility and power-producer stocks following Constellation Energy’s (CEG) announcement of a major clean-energy collaboration with Alphabet Inc.’s Google. The partnership includes adding 890 megawatts of new nuclear capacity to the PJM Interconnection grid, sparking investor interest in companies tied to electricity demand and AI-driven power solutions.
The rally in Vistra’s stock was part of a wider move across power producers, with Constellation Energy rising 13.29%, Talen Energy (TLN) gaining 12.15%, and NRG Energy (NRG) up 7.73%. The sector-wide gains were driven by Constellation’s 20-year power purchase agreement, which will support over $4.3 billion in upgrades across 11 nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, while creating thousands of jobs.
Vistra’s momentum was further bolstered by reports that the Trump administration is considering roughly $4 billion in loans to finance upgrades at three of the company’s nuclear plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Analyst James Thalacker of BMO Capital maintained an Outperform rating on Vistra but lowered the price target to $210 from $231.
Technically, Vistra’s stock moved above its 200-day moving average of $154.77, with a relative strength index (RSI) of 70.3, indicating overbought conditions. The stock traded on heavy volume, with about 14.4 million shares changing hands by 2:22 p.m. ET, significantly higher than its typical trading volume. At the time of publication, Vistra shares were up 10.38% at $159.93.
