Walgreens Expands into India with New Tech Centre in Chennai
US-based pharmacy chain Walgreens is expanding its presence in India by establishing a new Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. The GCC will focus on technology and business services, with plans for further expansion in subsequent years.
The centre is expected to create over 250 jobs in its first year, according to Walgreens' statement. This move reflects the growing trend of global companies setting up tech centres in Chennai, which already hosts major players like Citi, Barclays, and American Express.
Global Capability Centres have evolved beyond providing low-cost back-office support, with companies now using them for higher-value functions such as finance, software development, and research and development. This shift indicates a more strategic approach to outsourcing operations, allowing companies to tap into local talent and expertise.
