Wall Street Stocks Drift Amid Jobs Market Updates and Escalating Iran Tensions
Stocks experienced a mixed trading day on Wall Street as investors digested updates on the jobs market and escalating tensions in the US-Iran conflict.
The S&P 500 index rose 0.1%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 265 points, or 0.5%, by 9:58 a.m. Eastern time. In contrast, the Nasdaq composite fell 0.1%.
Tech stocks were a significant drag on market performance, with Microsoft declining 0.6% and Broadcom slipping 0.8%. These companies' large market values give them considerable influence over the broader market direction.
Oil prices remained relatively stable despite the intensification of hostilities in the US-Iran conflict. Brent crude fell 0.5% to $94.71 a barrel, while energy stocks mostly declined. Chevron's share price edged down 0.1% after confirming plans to expand operations in Venezuela.
The ongoing war has led to increased oil prices and higher shipping costs due to the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for 20% of global oil shipments. This has contributed to stubbornly high inflation rates, exacerbated by the US tariff war with much of the world.
