Walmart Caves: Apple Pay, Google Pay Arrive at Checkout

Walmart has finally relented to customer pressure and is introducing contactless payments at its stores. Apple Pay and Google Pay will soon be accepted alongside Walmart's own mobile payment system, which used a QR code at checkout.

The rollout of Tap to Pay will begin on August 24 and will reach all US Walmart stores and Sam's Clubs by the end of 2026. Fuel stations will follow suit by mid-2027.

Existing payment options like cash, chip cards, and mobile payments through Walmart Pay and Sam's Club Scan & Go will remain available alongside the new feature.

This move marks a significant shift for Walmart, which has long resisted embracing contactless payments. The company had promoted its own proprietary system instead, but customers have been asking for more flexibility at checkout.
