Walmart Ditches Own Payment System, Embracing Tap-To-Pay with Apple Pay and Google Pay
Walmart has officially adopted tap-to-pay technology from major credit card companies and digital payment services, including Apple Pay and Google Pay. This move is a significant shift for the retail giant, which previously pushed its own payment system, Walmart Pay.
The adoption of tap-to-pay technology allows customers to make payments by tapping their phone or credit card on a payment terminal, providing a faster and more secure way to checkout. According to the source, about 85% of retailers in the US already accept tap-to-pay, making it a widely accepted payment method.
Walmart's decision to adopt tap-to-pay is likely driven by customer demand for a seamless and convenient shopping experience. The technology also provides an additional layer of security, as payment information is encrypted into a one-time-use token that only banks can decipher.
Despite adopting tap-to-pay, Walmart Pay will still be available as an option for customers. However, the retailer may need to find ways to incentivize customers to use its own payment system, such as offering discounts or rewards.
