Walmart Sees Institutional Investor Support Amidst Earnings Growth Concerns
Palisade Capital Management LP has taken a new stake in Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT), acquiring 23,663 shares of the retailer's stock valued at approximately $2,680,000 in the second quarter.
This is not an isolated move, as other institutional investors have also modified their holdings of Walmart stock recently. State Street Corp increased its stake by 1.2% in the third quarter and now owns over 184 million shares, worth more than $19 billion. Geode Capital Management LLC lifted its position by 6.8% in the fourth quarter and owns nearly 103 million shares.
Walmart's recent quarterly earnings showed continued momentum beyond traditional store sales, with revenue reaching approximately $187.9 billion, global e-commerce growing 23%, and advertising revenue increasing 38%. Analysts and commentary continue to point to Walmart's expanding e-commerce, digital advertising, memberships, convenience-led fulfillment, automation, and AI initiatives as reasons the recent decline could represent a long-term buying opportunity.
However, there are also concerns about a potentially tougher consumer environment, with comparable sales growth being 3.4% excluding pharmacy-related items, and middle-income shoppers appearing increasingly focused on necessities and limiting discretionary purchases.
