Walmart's Retail Evolution Drives Record Revenue Growth
The retail industry is undergoing significant changes, shifting focus from physical stores to digital channels. Walmart (WMT) is benefiting from this trend, reporting a 5.9% increase in Q2 revenue to $187.9 billion. The company's e-Commerce sales saw a 23% jump, while advertising revenue rose by 38%, and membership revenue grew by 17%. This diversification beyond traditional retail operations has given Walmart several higher-growth businesses.
The company's adjusted operating income increased by 17.4% in constant currency, with its gross margin expanding 96 bps. Operating cash flow reached $19.7 billion, although free cash flow fell to $5.5 billion. Despite this, Walmart raised its FY 2027 outlook for sales growth of 4%-5% and adjusted operating income growth of 7%-8.5%. Bernstein analyst Zhihan Ma maintained a 'Buy' rating on the stock with a price objective of $142.
The combination of e-Commerce, advertising, and membership revenue is expected to improve Walmart's economics as digital scale increases. However, bears are concerned about the company's ability to deliver robust earnings growth despite deliberate pricing actions, elevated fuel costs, and increased inventory.
